Internet Browser Requirements

Before you use SciFinder, ensure that your Internet browser meets these requirements.

Note: Check with your organization's Site Administrator, Key Contact, or help desk before changing any settings to conform to these requirements.

No. Requirement
1 All of these are enabled for your browser:
  • JavaScript
  • Java
  • Cookies
2 A Java plug-in - Java Runtime Environment (JRE) update - is installed and available to your browser. JRE is needed for structure drawing.
3 For Internet Explorer only, you have both:
  • Appropriate ActiveX and plug-in permissions
  • Responsive network connection (affects availability of structure drawing editor)
4 Add https://scifinder.cas.org to your browser "Trusted Sites" list.

Internet Connection Requirements

Before you use SciFinder, ensure that your system meets these connection requirements:

  • SSL (https) connection on port 443 to scifinder.cas.org
  • http connection on port 80 to chemport.cas.org for full text linking

Recommended Configuration for Optimal SciFinder Performance

The hardware and browser configurations outlined below represent optimal target configurations for SciFinder on both PC and Mac platforms:

Windows-Based PCs:

CPU: 3GHz Core Duo
RAM: 2GB RAM
OS: Windows XP SP2
Browser: Firefox 3 or higher, IE7 or higher
Java Plug-in: Java 6 Update 16 or higher

Apple Mac OS X:

CPU: 2.66GHz Dual Core Xeon
RAM: 2GB RAM
OS: OS 10.5 or higher
Browser: Firefox 3.x
Java Plug-in: Latest JRE 1.5 bundled with the customer's Mac OS release
