Using highlighting to easily navigate a patent document

STN Viewers highlighting feature lets you find complete or partial terms in a large patent.  Simply highlight your terms and then use the Highlighting Map to quickly navigate to the parts of the document containing those terms.

To highlight terms:

  1. View details for a record.
  2. Within the Highlighting tab on the right side, enter terms to be highlighted, separating each term with a comma or semicolon.

You can also use the following for truncation or character masking:

? or * Any number of characters to the right, left, or within a term
#

One or zero characters to the right, left, or within a term (multiple # symbols may be used)

!        One character to the right, left, or within a term (multiple ! symbols may be used)
%      One or more numeric characters

Click Apply.

To navigate the record:

After you click Apply, the terms you entered are now highlighted in the patent text.  The Highlighting map is also created, showing the density of highlighted terms in the displayed section of the patent.  To navigate to another section of the patent, click its tab, e.g., claims.

You can also use the Highlighting map to navigate within a section.  Click on the portion of the Highlighting map where you would like to reposition the scroll bar, or drag the scroll bar to reposition it.
